Walter A. Elliot of Gary and Henry J. Kranz of Chicago were the developers of Villa Shores
subdivision on “Scenic Lake George in the Heart of Suburban Hobart.”

In August of 1937 ground was broken for the first house. By 1939 a total of 62 brick homes had
been constructed. Reportedly the residences were all sold before they were built! The first home
sold, at 227 Ash St., was purchased by a Walter Osiel, who was born and raised in Gary. He was a
first-generation American of Polish descent. He appears to have had steady employment as a diesetter and, according to U.S. Census figures, was married with children.

By April of 1940 the family is in their dream home. The cozy residences had 4-7 rooms and a
utility room. The purchase prices were $5,000 to $8,000, including the lot and house, financing costs, screen and storm doors, and landscaping. Later builds included air conditioning.
A completely appointed model home was on Court Street. The developers made it a priority to
hire local contractors, sub-contractors, and laborers. As the neighborhood grew the Villa Shores Civic Club was formed. In September of 1949 the completion of the 500th home was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1200 W. Home Ave., which was fully furnished and decorated.

The advertising folder in our archives states that there was a veterans’ housing program available
as well. Villa Shores remains one of Hobart’s iconic pre- and post- WWII communities. Chances are, if you didn’t grow up here, you know someone who did!
